About this specimen
Two colours divide this small Fujian group: the cubes on the left are saturated violet, those on the right a cool ice-blue, and both are glassy enough to see straight into. Inside the larger crystals that boundary repeats as squared-off ghosts — earlier cubes sealed within later ones, edges still parallel to the faces outside. A dark grey matrix seam runs along the base, flecked with metallic glints.
Phantoms of this kind record a pause. Fluorite, CaF2, grows layer by layer from cooling solution; when that solution’s chemistry shifts, the trace elements responsible for colour shift with it, and the crystal surface of that moment survives as a coloured shell inside the finished stone. Fluorite is soft for a display mineral at Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly in four directions, so lift this one by its matrix rather than by a projecting cube.
The group measures 5.5 × 3.4 × 4.6 cm and weighs 120 g. No base is included; every photograph here was taken of this piece alone.
