About this specimen

The fluorite here has given up almost all of its colour. Stepped, water-clear cubes climb the left side of the plate in a shallow staircase, transparent enough that the crust behind them shows straight through their faces; only in the thickest corners does a faint green whisper appear. The rest of the plate is a sugary pale green-white druse, granular and matte, which throws the glassy cubes into relief.

Xianghualing in Hunan is better known for bright greens and violets, so a near-colourless suite from the same ground is quietly unusual. Fluorite is CaF2, cubic, Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage on the octahedron — lift a plate like this by the matrix rather than by a cube corner, and keep it clear of hard knocks and sudden heat.

The plate runs 5.3 × 3.8 × 3.3 cm at 51 g and is presented on a clear acrylic cube. The photographs are of this piece as it will arrive, display block included.
