About this specimen

The fluorite here is barely coloured at all — pale green-grey and watery, more window than gemstone — and it grows as a staircase of cubes, each face offset from the last in flat parallel steps. Where the crystals meet the rock, dark green chlorite has been trapped inside them and dusted across the matrix below, and a small cluster of cream-pink carbonate crystals sits on the right-hand edge.

That chlorite is a Yaogangxian signature: fluorite from the mine frequently grew alongside the green micaceous mineral, which coats the matrix and drifts into the crystals as soft internal clouds. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, cleaving perfectly on octahedral planes, so the crisp cube corners on a piece like this are the first thing a careless shelf takes off.

Compact at 5.6 × 3.8 × 4.3 cm and 74 g, it is shown upright on a clear acrylic pedestal that holds the cubes at eye level. The photographs are of this exact cluster.
