About this specimen
Meigu, Sichuan, garden quartz with epidote at 6.4 cm; a small cabinet crystal. A single large quartz crystal, clear at the tip and smoky towards the base, with a garden of green epidote and rust-coloured inclusions suspended across its middle.
The inclusions in garden quartz are frozen mid-growth, which is why every crystal reads as a small, unrepeatable scene.
Epidote's deep pistachio to olive green and striated prism faces separate it from prehnite. Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Meigu County in the Liangshan prefecture of Sichuan is known for green phantom quartz with epidote and chlorite inclusions.
