About this specimen
One amber scheelite crystal, sharply pyramidal and honey-warm, stands on a small pedestal of pale mica and quartz. Its faces are stepped rather than mirror-flat — growth layers laid down like shingles — and the colour passes from near-orange on the right shoulder to a paler apricot on the left, transparent enough throughout for the internal fractures to glint.
Xuebaoding, in Sichuan, is the source of these pseudo-octahedral scheelites, grown in high-altitude greisen veins alongside beryl, cassiterite and books of muscovite. Scheelite is calcium tungstate, CaWO4: unusually dense for so pale a mineral, Mohs 4.5–5, and reliably bright blue-white under shortwave ultraviolet, which makes it one of the few species worth owning a lamp for.
At 3.6 × 2.5 × 3.6 cm and 50 g this is a small, single-crystal piece, mounted with white putty on the clear acrylic block seen in the photographs. Camera and courier see the same crystal — this is the one on offer.
