About this specimen
Hundreds of small spheres crowd this Indonesian cluster, packed tight against one another in soft lavender that shifts toward periwinkle where the light strikes and toward pale grey-green along the lower edge. The surface is satin rather than glassy — each ball is an aggregate of microscopic quartz crystals, so it scatters light instead of mirroring it — and a small patch of white druse breaks through near the upper right shoulder.
Sold in the trade as grape agate, the material is a botryoidal chalcedony, and nothing about the form has been shaped or polished: the rounded balls are simply how silica hardened inside a volcanic cavity. Chalcedony is hard, around Mohs 6.5–7, and asks for very little care beyond a soft dry brush worked between the spheres, which is where dust likes to settle.
The cluster runs 7.1 × 6.6 cm across the display face and 3.0 cm deep, weighing 125 g, and it rests naturally on its broken base without a stand. What you see photographed is the individual specimen that ships.
