About this specimen
Held up to a window this crystal turns the colour of dark honey poured thin. It is a single stout calcite of 3.3 cm, not a cluster: one broad glassy front face, edges cut back by narrow secondary faces, and a band across the middle where the amber deepens and a veil of internal frost drifts through. A small colourless calcite group has grown at the crest, water-clear against all that warmth.
Calcite, CaCO3, is the great shape-shifter of the mineral world, and the honey tone in Hubei material comes from iron taken into the growing lattice. It is also the classic demonstration of double refraction — look through a clear section at a fine line and it splits in two. All of which comes with a warning: Mohs 3, perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions, and a species that dulls on contact with acid. Dry cotton and a closed case.
Small and dense at 3.3 × 3.0 × 2.3 cm and 35 g, the crystal is shown on putty on a clear acrylic block. The crystal in these photographs is the crystal that will be packed for you.
