About this specimen

Honey runs along the top edges of this Daye calcite and fades into smoke as it moves down the crystal. The body is a single blocky rhomb, transparent enough to read the shadow of a fingertip through it, with a broad upper face finely etched in a cross-hatch of growth lines. One front edge has come out bright and glassy — a narrow natural bevel, no lapidary work involved, running the width of the crystal.

The Daye district in Hubei is iron-and-copper country, and its calcites often turn out much like this one: warm iron-stained tones over transparent crystal, sharp geometry, and a surface that keeps a record of its own growth in striations. Chemically it is CaCO3, trigonal, Mohs 3. Rhombohedral cleavage runs parallel to those bright edges, so a knock in the wrong place takes off a slice rather than a chip.

At 3.8 × 3.0 × 3.0 cm and 45 g this is a thumbnail with real presence, still attached to the dark red-brown matrix it grew on, and it comes without a stand. Every image was made from this crystal.
