About this specimen

A single crystal, and it needs no company: this mint-green fluorite is one glassy block a little under four centimetres across, its cube faces climbing in broad flat steps toward a beveled upper edge. The green is cool and watery rather than grassy, pale enough at the thin margins to see straight through, and gathering to a smoky teal where a frosted internal zone crosses the middle of the stone.

Those steps are growth in slow motion. Fluorite adds material layer by layer across a face, and when supply runs short the layers stall part-way, leaving the terraced edges and re-entrant corners visible here. Yaogangxian in southern Hunan is a tungsten mine, and its fluorites tend to arrive with exactly this cool tone and unusually flat, mirror-bright faces. Mohs 4 and cleavable in four directions — a dropped fluorite rarely chips, it splits.

The crystal is 3.8 × 3.6 × 2.8 cm and weighs 45 g, set on the clear acrylic bar visible in the photographs. Everything shown was photographed from this crystal, corner for corner.
