About this specimen
Perched at the lip of its matrix and cantilevered out over the edge, the calcite on this Zhejiang piece is a single blocky crystal of pale straw-yellow — translucent, broad-faced, with faint growth lines drifting across the flat faces and a soft glassy sheen rather than a mirror finish. The host block beneath is pale grey-white, patched with tan, and studded along its upper edge with small colourless druse crystals.
Calcite grows in a wider range of forms than almost any other mineral — rhombs, scalenohedra, blades, nailheads — and a large crystal still seated on its own matrix is the version collectors keep. The chemistry is plain CaCO3; the consequences are not. At Mohs 3 it marks against a steel pin, parts cleanly along three cleavage directions and fizzes in household acid, so a dry brush is the whole cleaning routine.
