About this specimen

Ice-blue cubes crown the upper left of this Yaogangxian piece, stepping down in shallow terraces from an edge so pale it is nearly colourless. Below and behind them the fluorite turns soft lavender and stays translucent, a smoky violet showing through from the interior. A water-clear quartz crystal leans out from the back, and tan mica rosettes cling to the right shoulder like small dried flowers.

Two colours in one crystal, and the boundary between them is sharp: blue and violet zones in fluorite come from different lattice defects, and a specimen that carries both records a real change in the fluid partway through growth. Yaogangxian, in Hunan, is worked chiefly for tungsten, and its fluorite regularly arrives in the company of clear quartz and pale mica. Mohs 4, so the cube corners are the vulnerable part.

4.8 × 3.6 × 4.3 cm, 40 g, shown held in the hand with no base supplied. Everything pictured belongs to this one specimen, and this specimen is the one on offer.
