About this specimen
Yangchun, Guangdong, malachite at 8.3 cm; a cabinet piece. An elongated ridge of botryoidal malachite in deep emerald green, the surface built from tightly packed rounded bubbles with a velvety sheen and a darker green core showing where the crust breaks.
Malachite forms wherever copper ores weather, but few localities match the depth of green and the velvet surfaces of central African material.
The Shilu copper-iron skarn at Yangchun in western Guangdong is a classic Chinese source of well-crystallised calcite, quartz and sulfides.
Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 8.3 × 5.4 × 3.4 cm (3.27 × 2.13 × 1.34 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
