About this specimen
Two small mica masses stand side by side on a single acrylic block, and the contrast between them is the point of the set. The left piece is a muted grey-violet, its plates stacked and part-split so that dark lines run between them like the edges of pages; the right is cooler and paler, a silvery near-colourless lilac that throws back much more light. Both are all cleavage faces and no free terminations.
Micas are sheet silicates, and the single perfect cleavage that defines the group is exactly what you are looking at: every flat, glinting plane is one layer of the structure parting from the next. They are soft, roughly Mohs 2.5 to 3, and the flakes are elastic rather than brittle — bend one and it springs back, unusual behaviour in a mineral. Lilac tones in mica generally track lithium sitting in the structure. Handle these by the mount, not by the plates.

Mica is a group of sheet-silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals defined by a perfect basal cleavage that lets them split into thin, flexible, elastic sheets. The common species are muscovite (pale, potassium-rich) and biotite (dark, iron- and magnesium-rich). Micas are widespread in granites, schists and pegmatites, where they can grow as large, well-formed 'books'.
