About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, mica with quartz and calcite at 7.9 cm and 145 g; a small cabinet piece. A block of silvery mica books with a small clear quartz prism standing at its centre and white calcite crystals scattered around it, the mica pearly and the quartz glassy.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.

Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle. Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6 × 4.5 × 7.9 cm (2.36 × 1.77 × 3.11 in) and 145 g (5.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.

About Mica

Mica is a group of sheet-silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals defined by a perfect basal cleavage that lets them split into thin, flexible, elastic sheets. The common species are muscovite (pale, potassium-rich) and biotite (dark, iron- and magnesium-rich). Micas are widespread in granites, schists and pegmatites, where they can grow as large, well-formed 'books'.
