About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, mica with scheelite at 10.7 cm and 416 g; a cabinet piece. A rounded dome of tan mica rosettes packed edge to edge, with a scheelite crystal the supplier lists tucked near the top.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

Scheelite forms pseudo-octahedral bipyramids in Chinese tungsten deposits and fluoresces blue-white under short-wave UV.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

The piece is cabinet in size, 9.3 × 6.5 × 10.7 cm (3.66 × 2.56 × 4.21 in) and 416 g (14.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.

About Mica

Mica is a group of sheet-silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals defined by a perfect basal cleavage that lets them split into thin, flexible, elastic sheets. The common species are muscovite (pale, potassium-rich) and biotite (dark, iron- and magnesium-rich). Micas are widespread in granites, schists and pegmatites, where they can grow as large, well-formed 'books'.
