About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, mica with feldspar and aquamarine at 8.3 cm; a cabinet plate. The supplier did not record a weight.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them. Glassy hexagonal prisms and a sea-blue tone define the aquamarine variety.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 4.9 × 8.3 × 3.4 cm (1.93 × 3.27 × 1.34 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.

About Mica

Mica is a group of sheet-silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals defined by a perfect basal cleavage that lets them split into thin, flexible, elastic sheets. The common species are muscovite (pale, potassium-rich) and biotite (dark, iron- and magnesium-rich). Micas are widespread in granites, schists and pegmatites, where they can grow as large, well-formed 'books'.
