About this specimen
Thin ochre-yellow calcite plates project from an irregular, fairly open cluster. Several broad plates face forward, while others are seen edge-on as narrow blades. Smaller ruffled growths occupy the lower portions and surround the larger upright forms.
The spaces between the plates are an important part of the specimen: they allow the separate outlines to remain visible instead of merging into a solid mass. Pale edges and occasional lighter patches interrupt the deeper yellow-brown color. This Guangdong calcite is defined by the contrast between broad thin faces, crisp margins and finely clustered smaller growths.
