About this specimen
One sea-green fluorite cube rides high on the left of this Inner Mongolian plate, glassy and sharply edged, with a dark angular shape suspended inside it — an earlier stage of the crystal caught mid-growth and then overgrown in clear green. Around it the matrix is upholstered in small lemon-and-olive spheres, and along the bottom edge three or four water-clear cubes catch the light with almost no colour at all.
A phantom like this records a pause. The crystal grew, something changed in the fluid — a dusting of another mineral, a shift in chemistry — and growth resumed over the coated face, sealing the old outline permanently in place. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage on four planes, so keep it clear of harder specimens on a crowded shelf.
Dimensions are 4.6 × 3.5 × 2.9 cm at 57 g, and the piece is supplied on the clear acrylic block it stands on in the images. These photographs are of the exact plate offered here.
