About this specimen
The cubes on this Inner Mongolia specimen are purple pressed so far past velvet that they read as black until light gets behind them, at which point the edges glow violet and the interiors give up step after step of squared-off phantom growth. Banked around and beneath them is a crust of pale olive-yellow spheres, matte and botryoidal, which throws the dark fluorite forward.
Phantoms form when growth pauses long enough for a film of another mineral, or simply a change in the fluid, to settle on the crystal faces before growth resumes; the outline of the smaller, earlier cube stays sealed inside the larger one. The near-black saturation comes from colour centres in the CaF2 lattice. Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, so handle it by the matrix and not by the corners.
