About this specimen
Yunnan red aragonite at 2.6 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Pink-lilac aragonite needles stand up in a crest along the top of a grey rock, packed close so the growth reads as a single soft ridge above the matrix.
Aragonite grows as radiating or stacked crystals, a habit that gives the species its sculptural, coral-like look.
Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.
The piece is miniature in size, 2.6 × 2.2 × 1.6 cm (1.02 × 0.87 × 0.63 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
