Seen from the front the fluorite is almost egg-shaped, and the whole dome is built from cube corners stacked into ledges — pale lilac above, teal-green and deep violet in the lower zones. About this specimen
Seen from the front, the fluorite crowning this Yaogangxian specimen is almost egg-shaped, and every square millimetre of that dome is built from cube corners stacked into ledges. The upper surface is pale lilac and glassy enough to look wet; deeper in, teal-green zones and a bruise-dark violet show through, sharpest under a large step. Beneath it the piece changes character: a cushion of cream, book-like platelets — the micaceous matrix of this locality — with a colourless quartz crystal wedged among them.
The staircase habit comes from skeletal growth. Crystallising quickly, fluorite piles material onto cube edges faster than it fills the face centres, so each layer sits inset from the one below and the crystal ends a stack of squares rather than a smooth block. It rewards a moving lamp. At Mohs 4 with four perfect cleavage planes, those exposed ledges are the part to protect.
The upright specimen measures 14.7 × 3.2 × 5.6 cm and weighs 160 g. Each photograph is of this individual, on the clear acrylic base shown with it.
