About this specimen

Hold this Yaogangxian crystal against the light and the colour turns inside out: soft lavender along every edge and corner, and a cool blue-green pooled in the middle, glowing through the translucent faces like water seen under ice. A stepped ridge runs diagonally over the top where the twin halves meet, each step a paused growth face, and faint interior planes mark where earlier faces once stood.

Zoning like this is a record of chemistry. Fluorite, CaF2, takes its colour centres from whatever fluid happens to be passing while a layer grows, so a change in the vein is frozen into the crystal as a change in hue. Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage means the corners are the vulnerable part — carry it by the flanks, not the tips.

3.8 × 3.6 × 2.8 cm, 65 g, unmounted and easy in the palm. This is the crystal in the photographs, and the one that will be sent.
