About this specimen
Acid-lime green, and glittering with it. This pyromorphite is a thicket of stubby hexagonal barrels, every crystal face roughened by a second generation of smaller crystals grown on top, which is what breaks the light into so many small points. The colour is the sharp yellow-green of new spring foliage, darkening in the hollows between barrels and paling toward mint along the right-hand edge.
Pyromorphite is a lead chlorophosphate, Pb5(PO4)3Cl, and a secondary mineral: it grows in the oxidised upper zones of lead deposits, out of the chemical ruins of galena. Guangxi is one of the classic sources for material in this bright green. The species is soft at Mohs 3.5 to 4 and the crystal tips are brittle, so lift it by the matrix and keep fingers clear of the growth.
The plate runs 9.9 × 8.1 × 2.8 cm and weighs 170 g. It comes fixed with white putty to a clear acrylic block, tilted so the crystal field turns toward the viewer. The photographs were taken of this exact plate.
