About this specimen
The base of this Indian specimen is a crust of brassy pyrite whose surfaces have taken on an oil-slick tarnish, gold shading into green and bronze depending on the angle you hold it. Out of that bed grow colourless quartz crystals: two long, well-formed points reaching up and back, a low glassy dome between them, and clusters of finer needles fanning from the flanks.
The rainbow on pyrite (FeS2) is nothing anyone applied. It is an extremely thin oxidation film on the crystal faces, and it splits white light much as a soap bubble does. That film is the fragile part of the specimen: wiping, polishing or wet cleaning will take it straight off. Keep the piece dry and use a soft brush only. The quartz, at Mohs 7, asks for nothing.
It measures 6.9 × 4.9 × 3.4 cm and weighs 105 g, presented on the clear acrylic stand pictured. Photographs throughout show this one piece, not a representative sample.
