About this specimen
Held up to a window this one nearly vanishes. The cubes are water-clear, stacked in stepped ranks across the whole front of the piece, and you can look through the top crystal to the ones behind it. Grey-green dust has settled into the grooves between cubes, and low on the left a flush of rose shows where the matrix lies underneath. It reads as ice rather than stone.
Colourless fluorite is about as close to pure CaF2 as a collector will handle: the purples, greens and blues of other pockets come from lattice defects and trace elements, and where those are absent the crystal has nothing to absorb with. Xianghualing, in southern Hunan, turns out this glassy near-colourless material alongside the tin minerals it is better known for. Cleavage is perfect on the octahedron and hardness is only 4, so keep it clear of harder specimens on the shelf.
7.6 × 4.6 × 4.3 cm and 170 g, sized for the front row of a cabinet, with a hand in frame to give the scale. Photographed from life, and the piece pictured is the piece sold.
