About this specimen
One crystal carries this piece. A large glassy fluorite, faintly green through the core and colourless at the edges, sits square on near-black matrix and takes up most of the specimen’s height. Its faces are lightly etched and slightly frosted rather than mirror-flat, softening the light passing through. A collar of much smaller olive-to-straw fluorites crowds the base.
Fluorite and cassiterite keep company in tin ground for a chemical reason: both come from the same fluorine-rich late-stage fluids. Tin travels as fluoride complexes, and the fluorine left behind when it drops out ends up locked into CaF2. The pairing is common, though rarely this well composed, with one dominant crystal instead of a crust. Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage; the etch figures will not polish out, and should not.
It measures 7.1 × 4.6 × 4.6 cm and weighs 180 g, sized for the hand and a small shelf. There is no stand; the matrix gives it a flat, stable foot. Every photograph on this listing was made from this specimen.
