About this specimen

One crystal, not a cluster. A single fluorite tents up to a sharp apex, its whole body a periwinkle so pale it reads as frozen water from one angle and lilac from the next. Every face is built from parallel terraces, hundreds of shallow steps marching across the surface, and a few apricot-coloured inclusions hang beneath the skin like fish under ice.

Yaogangxian is better known for saturated blue-green cubes, which makes this ghost-pale, stepped growth an unusual voice from a familiar mine. The stepping records layer-by-layer deposition on the cube faces; at the lower left a scrap of the original matrix survives, dusted with dark micro-crystals. Fluorite sits at Mohs 4 and cleaves cleanly on the octahedron, so a soft brush is the only cleaning it should ever be given.

5.3 × 2.5 × 5.1 cm and 96 g — a miniature that settles into the palm. No base is supplied. Every photograph on this listing was taken of this crystal, matrix scrap and all.
