About this specimen
Jiangxi, red hematoid quartz with dolomite and pyrite at 3.2 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Clear quartz crystals carry a scatter of lacquer-red hematite spots across their faces, with cream dolomite crusting their tops and brassy pyrite grains set into the base.
Hematoid quartz is coloured by hematite inclusions, giving it a warm red-to-orange body colour that intensifies in strong light.
Dolomite's slightly curved rhombohedral faces separate it at a glance from calcite. Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
Jiangxi's tungsten mines, Xihuashan and Piaotang among them, are the classic source of wolframite, scheelite, baryte, fluorite and calcite specimens.
By size it is miniature, 3.2 × 2 × 1.5 cm (1.26 × 0.79 × 0.59 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
