About this specimen
Shanxi red hematoid quartz at 1.5 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. A compact group of quartz crystals coloured deep orange-red by hematite, the points blunt and close-packed with the colour holding right to the tips.
Hematoid quartz is coloured by hematite inclusions, giving it a warm red-to-orange body colour that intensifies in strong light.
Shanxi produces calcite, fluorite and quartz from its lead-zinc and fluorite districts.
Dimensions place it in the thumbnail range, 1.5 × 1.2 × 1 cm (0.59 × 0.47 × 0.39 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
