About this specimen
Amber-gold scheelite crystals stack up the length of this Xuebaoding piece, three of them in a leaning column on the left and a fourth crowded in at the right, each carrying the blunt, pseudo-octahedral outline the locality is known for, their faces glowing honey where light passes through them. Threaded between and over them are muscovite rosettes in a paler olive-gold, splitting into the papery curled books that mica always makes, with a few brighter flecks catching light near the centre.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, CaWO4, and one of the principal ores of tungsten. It is soft for its weight at Mohs 4.5 to 5 and noticeably dense in the hand, and under shortwave ultraviolet it answers with a blue-white glow — the classic field test for the species. Xuebaoding, in Pingwu County, Sichuan, is the source that made this crystal habit familiar to collectors outside China.
