About this specimen
Fujian smoky quartz with garnet at 5.6 cm; a small cabinet piece, priced with the tip disclosed. The supplier did not record a weight.
Smoky quartz owes its brown-to-black tone to natural irradiation of trace aluminium in the lattice, and the best pieces keep transparency through the colour.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle. Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Fujian's fluorite-quartz veins have supplied collectors for two decades; the province is the source of most of the green and purple Chinese fluorite on the market.
By size it is small cabinet, 2.3 × 2.3 × 5.6 cm (0.91 × 0.91 × 2.20 in). Disclosed condition: a very slightly damaged tip. The price reflects it and the photographs show the affected area. Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
