About this specimen
Fujian smoky quartz with garnet at 6.8 cm and 134 g; a small cabinet floater. A stout smoky quartz crystal with small red garnet crystals set into its faces, the two minerals the supplier lists, the tip complete and the base grown free as the supplier notes.
Smoky quartz owes its brown-to-black tone to natural irradiation of trace aluminium in the lattice, and the best pieces keep transparency through the colour.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Fujian is China's most productive fluorite province, and its granite-hosted veins also yield the garnet, quartz and calcite that fill modern collections.
