About this specimen
Yunxiao, Fujian, smoky quartz with garnet and feldspar at 2.9 cm; a miniature. A white feldspar matrix carries a smoky quartz crystal at its centre with small dark red garnets set into the rock around it, each one catching a point of light.
The smoky colour is natural and usually deepens toward the terminations while the prism bases stay clearer.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals. Feldspar forms the blocky, pale crystals that act as a stage for the more colourful minerals in a pegmatite pocket.
Yunxiao County in southern Fujian is a modern classic for orange spessartine garnet on smoky quartz and feldspar, mined from granite pegmatite pockets.
By size it is miniature, 2.9 × 2.6 × 2.4 cm (1.14 × 1.02 × 0.94 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
