About this specimen
Yunxiao, Fujian, smoky quartz with feldspar at 3.1 cm; a miniature. A smoky quartz crystal sits in a pocket of cream feldspar, the quartz clear at its edges and darkening to grey-brown through the core, with small feldspar crystals stepping up around it.
Smoky quartz owes its brown-to-black tone to natural irradiation of trace aluminium in the lattice, and the best pieces keep transparency through the colour.
Feldspar forms the blocky, pale crystals that act as a stage for the more colourful minerals in a pegmatite pocket.
Yunxiao County in southern Fujian is a modern classic for orange spessartine garnet on smoky quartz and feldspar, mined from granite pegmatite pockets.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3.1 × 3 × 1.9 cm (1.22 × 1.18 × 0.75 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
