About this specimen
Two stibnite blades meet at almost a right angle here, and they could hardly be less alike. The upright one is sheathed in a mustard-and-olive crust that has eaten into its surface; the blade springing sideways from it is bright untouched steel, deeply striated down its length and mirror-clean on the cleavage face. That contrast between corroded and pristine is the whole appeal of the piece.
Stibnite (Sb2S3) is antimony sulphide, and Hunan is its classic source — the blades grow long and prismatic with the vertical striations you can count along this one. It is also Mohs 2, soft enough that a fingernail marks it and flexible enough to bend under a careless grip. The yellow crust is the mineral’s own alteration product, a reminder that prolonged light and humidity dull stibnite over time; keep it dark, dry and unhandled.
The specimen stands 6.6 × 5.3 × 4.3 cm and weighs 150 g, fixed with putty to the small acrylic cube seen in the images. Nothing here is a stock photo — this is the piece itself.
