About Hypersthene
Hypersthene belongs to the inosilicate class in the pyroxene group (orthopyroxene) and has the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)SiO3. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is one of the most visually varied minerals in the collector market.
Identification & care
Hypersthene typically forms prismatic; lamellar; granular masses in igneous rocks. Its color range is broad, including grayish, brownish, greenish, black, and strong bronzy schiller luster. The luster is vitreous to pearly, submetallic, the streak is gray-brown, and specimens range from translucent to opaque. The cleavage is good {210} two directions at 88° and 92°. The fracture is uneven, which aids identification.
