About this specimen
Rutile fills almost every part of this Brazilian quartz tower. Golden-yellow needles criss-cross in a dense, tangled mass, mixed with darker blue-black strands, so the tower looks deep brown in shade and lights up like woven straw when the sun hits it.
The six-sided point and faces are polished to a bright gloss, which shows the needles right up to the tip. Toward the base the rutile thins slightly and the quartz opens up. It is a heavily included, dramatic piece: compare the sunlit photos on dark cloth with the garden shots to see how much the light changes it.
