About this specimen
Held to the light this calcite turns smoky — one blocky crystal, greyish brown, shot through with cloudy white patches and fine rust-red threads that seem suspended in mid-stone. The bevelled top edges run glass-bright in long straight lines while the interior stays soft and diffuse, so the piece reads as solid and hazy at once.
Anhui yields calcite in heavy geometric single crystals like this one rather than in delicate sprays. The flashes inside are not fractures but cleavage: calcium carbonate, CaCO3, parts perfectly in three directions, and incipient planes within the crystal act as small internal mirrors. At Mohs 3 it can be marked by a copper coin, and it etches on contact with acid — keep vinegar, descalers and household cleaners well away from it.
A substantial little thing at 5.6 × 4.1 × 4.8 cm and 184 g, noticeably heavy for its size. No stand is included; the crystal sits stably on its own flat base. These images were taken of the specimen you will receive.
