About this specimen
Straw-pale calcite rhombs stack upward into a narrow tower on this Daye piece, each plate set slightly back from the one beneath so the profile steps in as it rises. Nothing here was cut or shaped — the pagoda is simply how the crystals grew. Dark specks of pyrite are frozen through the translucent carbonate, thickest around the shoulders.
Calcite (CaCO3) is Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions, and it is chemically fragile as well as physically soft: any acid, vinegar and household descaler included, will etch the faces and dull that glassy translucency. Dry dusting only. Daye, in Hubei, is old iron and copper ground, and pyrite riding inside calcite is a signature of that kind of ore body.
The tower stands 4.3 × 2.5 × 3.0 cm and weighs 40 g, mounted on the clear acrylic block shown. Every frame was shot from this tower, block and all.
