About this specimen

Stubby dogtooth points crowd together in olive-gold and honey, a bouquet of calcite no bigger than a walnut. The crystals are translucent, glossy on the faces that point outward and frosted where they press against one another, and tucked into the gaps between them sit tiny brassy pyrite crystals that catch the light whenever the specimen moves.

Tonglushan is copper-bearing skarn country, and that setting is written into the piece: calcite crystallising in open cavities alongside sulphides, its warm tone carried in by the same iron-rich fluids. The scalenohedral — dogtooth — habit is the classic form here. At Mohs 3 the points bruise easily, so lift the specimen by its base rather than by the crystals.

Small but complete at 3.8 × 3.3 × 2.0 cm and 26 g, it comes fixed to a clear acrylic cube that lifts the crystals clear of the shelf. The photographs are of this exact cluster, stand included.
