About this specimen

Pale, near-colourless calcite crowds the front of this Daye plate, glassy and translucent, several crystals carrying a smoky grey core and a wash of rust staining where growth ran dirty for a while. They sit against a sooty black crust streaked with rust, and the meeting of the two surfaces — wet-looking crystal against matte charcoal — is the whole argument of the specimen.

Calcite, CaCO3, is Mohs 3 and parts along three perfect cleavage directions; a dropped crystal does not chip so much as come apart into rhombs, so this is a piece to lift by its dark base. The listing records baryte in association; what the camera settles on plainly is the calcite, its faces bright enough to throw highlights back at the lens. Vinegar and household acids etch carbonate on contact — keep both far away.

A comfortable 6.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm at 120 g, unmounted, photographed in the hand so the translucency reads against the dark matrix. This is the individual specimen offered, not a representative sample.
