About this specimen
A rosette of cream-white calcite plates opens at the lower right of this piece, blade stacked on blade like the leaves of a book fanned open. Everything around it is charcoal-dark rock carpeted in a dense frost of tiny colourless crystals, so the specimen reads as one warm, soft flower set on a field of glitter. A second, smaller group of white blades sits high on the right edge.
The stepped, layered habit matches the material traded out of Inner Mongolia as flower calcite, though the exact mine for this piece has not been confirmed and we would rather say so than guess. Calcite is Mohs 3 and parts along three rhombohedral directions; it also fizzes in dilute acid, so keep household cleaners and ultrasonic tanks well away and dust it with a soft brush instead.
The plate measures 5.5 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm and weighs 100 g, and no stand is supplied. Photography was done on the specimen itself, in hand, with nothing swapped in.
