About this specimen
A single pale sea-green fluorite cube, glassy enough to show the cloud-white veils suspended inside it, is wedged against a mound of pearly platy calcite, the two meeting along one dark seam of included micro-crystals. The fluorite face reads almost like sea glass; the calcite behind it is all overlapping petals, silky across the middle and translucent at the thin edges.
The contact is the point of this piece. Chenzhou, in southern Hunan, is fluorite country, and here a second species has grown hard against the cube out of the same cavity, with neither mineral damaged in getting the other out of the ground. Mind the hardness gap — fluorite at Mohs 4, calcite at Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage — and store the piece where nothing can rub across those calcite plates.
It measures 7.2 × 5.1 × 4.4 cm and weighs 151 g, sized for the hand as photographed. What arrives in the box is the piece in these pictures — cube, calcite and all.
