About this specimen

Plum-dark at the corners and nearly clear along the edges, the fluorite cubes on this Yaogangxian piece carry their colour in bands that follow the cube faces inward; look into the largest crystal and a green ghost sits inside the purple. The faces are finely stepped rather than mirror-smooth, a small white spray of dolomite perches at the upper right, all on a matrix crusted in olive-green drusy quartz.

That olive cast does the specimen a favour, because purple reads far more strongly against green than against white. The banding is a growth record: traces of rare-earth elements and defects in the CaF2 lattice change with each pulse of fluid, freezing the vein’s chemistry into visible layers. Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, so keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners.

The specimen measures 6.4 × 4.6 × 3.3 cm and weighs 95 g, a miniature that rewards a light behind it in the case. It arrives without a base. Photographed loose in the hand, it is the exact stone that will be packed for you.
