About this specimen
The carver worked with the stone rather than against it: this skull is cut from milky white fluorite shot through with soft moss-green zones, and the green falls across the brow and one eye socket where it does the most good. The finish is matte throughout, a frosted surface that scatters light rather than reflecting it, and the crown and one temple are left as rough cleaved fluorite — flat blocky faces stepping away from the carved face.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, isometric and Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions. That cleavage gives the untouched areas their stepped, brick-like look, and it is also why carved fluorite needs a soft landing: a sharp knock along a cleavage plane parts the stone cleanly. The white-to-green banding records shifts in fluid chemistry while the original crystal was still growing.
The skull stands 8.6 × 5.1 × 7.1 cm and sits flat and steady on its own jaw, so no stand is needed. Everything in the photographs is this skull itself.
