About this specimen
Ink-dark purple cubes lock together across the face of this Anshun specimen, and no two of them share a finish. Several present matte, faintly velvety faces the colour of a bruise; one on the right is glassy, its violet interior legible right through to the far corner. Threading between them is a pale cream druse of minute grains, and a milky translucent mass fills the right-hand edge.
The Anshun Gypsum Mine in Guizhou produces fluorite in exactly this register: deep, almost blackish purple, in cubes that grew crowded against one another so that faces are interrupted and restarted rather than cleanly finished. The cream lining went down after the fluorite stopped growing, a later crust filling every gap the cubes left. CaF2 is Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly along four octahedral planes, so the sharpest corners are also the most vulnerable.
4.8 × 4.8 × 3.8 cm, 96 g. The cluster balances on its own broken underside and asks for no base. Photographed as it is, with nothing added or removed.
