White drusy quartz has closed over this Fujian fluorite on every side but one, leaving a single broad window: it looks straight into a violet-indigo core that pales to lavender and finally to clear where the crystal thins toward its lower edge.
The form beneath the crust is cubic, the coating squaring off along flat crystal faces and heaping thickest on the shoulders. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly on the octahedron, which is why so many Chinese cubes carry small stepped losses at their corners; here the quartz jacket has taken that duty, armouring the flanks and leaving the purple window untouched. Colour this deep usually comes from trace rare-earth substitution and lattice defects rather than from any single impurity.
