About this specimen
Ink-dark blue fluorite crystals are strewn across a chalky white plate, the largest a rounded bead near the centre with two more below it and smaller ones scattered toward the upper edge. The colour is so concentrated they read almost black head-on; tilt the piece and light finds the thin outer edges, where the true violet-blue comes through. Tiny pale lilac cubes sit half-buried in the quartz around them.
That near-opaque blue is not an impurity in the ordinary sense. In fluorite it comes from colour centres — sites in the CaF2 lattice where the fluorine order is disturbed and trapped electrons absorb light. Where the crystals thin, the effect thins with them, which is why the edges look brighter than the bodies. The white ground is a fine quartz crust, granular and dull in a way that makes the dark beads read harder still.
The plate is 6.1 × 4.3 × 2.3 cm and weighs 60 g. It ships on the clear acrylic block shown, held with green putty at the contact. The specimen you see photographed is the specimen you will own.
