About this specimen

Fine parallel striations comb every face of this single calcite crystal, breaking the light into soft silver lines that shift as the piece is turned. The crystal is smoky grey-white and translucent, blocky rather than pointed, with clean bevelled edges where one face meets the next. It sits on a dark, iron-stained matrix seeded with small colourless calcite — a rough mineralised floor beneath all that glassy bulk.

Fujian calcite of this style is collected for that combination: one large, self-contained crystal whose striated faces record the pulses of growth that built it. Calcite (CaCO3) is trigonal and soft at Mohs 3, and its perfect rhombohedral cleavage means a knock on an edge can start a bright step-fracture. Dust it with a soft brush and keep acids away — even household vinegar will etch those faces.

The specimen measures 6.4 × 5.3 × 3.6 cm and weighs 115 g, an easy palm size. No base is fitted; the matrix stands it upright as shown. What you see photographed here is the piece that will be shipped to you.
