About this specimen

Inner Mongolia purple-edged green fluorite with quartz at 22 × 15 × 8 cm and 2500 g; a large cabinet piece. A large plate of white quartz with rounded green fluorite crystals across it, each ball edged in dark purple and frosted on the surface, the largest at the top.

Fluorite is the classic collector's halide: calcium fluoride that grows as cubes, octahedra and stepped combinations, often with colour zoning that shows best in daylight.

Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.

By size it is large cabinet, 22 × 15 × 8 cm (8.66 × 5.91 × 3.15 in) and 2500 g (88.2 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
